I remember that it was not that long ago that I did not know what a blog was or what one was for. Now blogs are everywhere and anyone with a computer and Internet access may be writing one. If you are new to this whole blog phenomenon let me explain a little about what a blog is. Blog’s got their name from combining two words “Web log” to make one word, “blog”.
For most people, blogs started out as something like an online diary for friends and relatives to read. Instead of going to the trouble of sending out individual emails to all of your friends and relatives to let them know how things are going in your life, you could simply write a blog for all of them to view. This way everyone could know all of the interesting developments in your personal life and you could save time and energy by not writing to everyone individually. This was the origin of blogs. Oh how far we have come since then.
Blogs then grew into marketing devices, ways to get revenge, and methods of raising awareness on important issues. Some of the more famous blogs are ones written by current disgruntled employees of large corporations. These large corporations, such as Microsoft, have been scrambling to deal with the bad public relations created by these blogs written by angry employees.
There are many ways that you can set up a blog. Whether you want to use a blog for professional or personal reasons you can find a service to help you out. Many companies have been scrambling to create blogging software for consumers. However, there are also many blogging sites that will let you use their software for free. What The Hell Is A Blog Anyway?
The word ‘blog’ is a shortened version of ‘web blog’. A ‘web log’ just means a log or diary-type entry on the web. So if you were away travelling on a round the world trip you might post a diary on a website so your friends and family could keep up to date with your progress. On this online diary, or ‘web blog’ you might also post photos for your friends and family to view.
And so - the BLOG was born. And it’s really nothing more than that - a collection of thoughts and information from one individual to be read and seen by others.
So What Makes A Blog Different To A Website?
A blog is more immediate and informal. A blog doesn’t have a homepage as such - it just has blog entries or ‘posts’. The author or ‘blogger’ makes regular posts into the blog that are archived as new ones are added.
The main difference between a website and a blog is that a blog is designed to be added to much more frequently than a website. Some blogs are added to by their authors once a day or more! But it has to be said that such bloggers are in the minority.
**Is Blogging For You?
Well, it provides you with a unique opportunity to keep in close contact with a specific group of people. The CEO of a company may choose to launch a blog to keep in touch with staff members and shareholders. As a business-owner you might want to start a blog to let your customers or suppliers know what is happening in your business.
Blogs are not for everyone, so here’s a few key questions to ask yourself.
** Question 1
Do you want to keep in close contact, on a one-to-one basis with a specific group of individuals?
** Question 2
Do you have the time to add a new and valuable information to your blog at least once a week? (Or can you pay someone to do this on your behalf?)
** Question 3
Do you find that people are always coming to you wanting more information about your product or services and that maybe posting regular updates on the Internet about this might free up your time to be spent on other activities?
** Question 4
Are you offering information products or services that you can provide ‘tasters’ of in a blog?
If you find yourself answering yes to most of these question then you should seriously consider starting your very own blog.
It’s A Gut Feel Thing
Ultimately the decision comes down to whether you have things to say to others on a one-to-one basis. Unlike many websites you see out there, a blog is very much a person-to-person experience. A corporate blog wouldn’t really work unless you had a face and name that people could put to all the posts.
It’s also worth noting that a blog can be a two-way communication tool. Most of the blog software available includes options for readers to be able to post comments in response to what has been written. This can be an excellent marketing and research tool for your business if handled in the right way.
Whatever you do - don’t take the decision to start a blog lightly. It can be a big commitment and once you’ve started out on that road there’s no going back. People will be regularly checking your blog after you’ve publicised it and the pressure is then on to deliver readable material on a regular basis.

Here is a very useful article writing strategy just devised, for those of you who are starting off with your Blogs and Web Sites. If you seem to be stuck for content and are suffering from Writers’ block then a subscription to Google Alerts is a very good way of giving you the insider slant on any topic you choose.In your own particular field you should have a good think about the keywords that reflect your own special niches and then create an “Alerts” account with Google for these.
Every morning in your inbox you will have a large selection of hot breaking news flashes from around the world that you can digest and then turn into an article or post or even a series of articles.
Be careful about the choice of keywords you select since you may end up getting mountains of news clips which have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with your subject. This is the down side to this strategy …it takes a little while to get a handle on it and fine tune your “Alert” keyword selection but believe me it will provide you with insights into your own particular field that you missed or were completely unaware of. Of course the beauty of this system is that it is targetted to your specific needs as opposed to getting a pile of RSS feeds that while they may be very interesting in themselves, only serve to distract you from your main objective.
As a person who has been known to suffer from Information Hyper-overload …I can tell you that you need to be much more disciplined with this approach and we all know that Discipline is the key to many of the goals we need to achieve in life be they Personal or Business. Implementing this system would make a really achiveable Goal for a Web Site Owner who needs fresh content frequently. Here are my Top Ten Tips to getting the best out of this strategy.
(1) Read the Alerts before you do anything else when you open your e-mail inbox in the morning.
(2) Delete immediately the ones that are unrelated.
(3 Read quickly the ones that interest you by clicking the link and decide then and there which clip you will use for a future article or post.You don’t have to then and there decide which article you are going to write today.Just work the system.
(4) Copy and paste the article clip into a Word file with Date and Headline of your choice and file in a pre setup Folder for that particular topic.
(5) If you don’t have time at that moment to draft your article that’s no problem; you have an ever growing file of Content Magic that you can refer to again and again.Some marketers refer to this as a swipe file.
(6) Keep a separate file that is at the top of your Inbox Folders for immediately filing those e-mails that you are going to keep for future use, so you can easily access this in an instant without trawling through the minefield of other folders to find what you are looking for.
(7) If you have several niches or topics that you write about then you need of course to keep each clip in its correct sub folder.
(8)Sometimes I find that I might get stuck into a rather deeper exploration of the particular topic than previously envisaged so I would part write the article and come back to it later.
(9) One final point…if you want to keep cranking out fresh content and blog posts regularly you should discipline yourself to using this system first thing, before you open the rest of your e-mail inbox every morning. Opening the e mail will just distract you. Get the article (from your previously filed clips) written and posted before you get stuck into that wonderful experience of the ritual opening of the Inbox and you won’t be wishing at the end of the day that you had written more.
(10) Just do all of the above every day without fail!
One Article a day will put you up there with the most prolific of writers, web site owners and Bloggers and will get you much more traffic to your sites as time goes on when visitors notice your regular output
Remember the purpose of this exercise is to inform your readers and subscribers and get them to recognise you as the one with whom they should do business!

Take a look at the title of this post one more time, now ask yourself this question, “Am I doing everything that I possibly can to get my website seen?”

There are also banner and link exchanges dedicated to listing and displaying your link or banner that are free or low cost.
- If you like to write articles like I do (and even if you don’t) you can submit your articles all over the internet for no cost and if you tie in your sig. file at the end of your article you will be getting links back to your site for no additional cost.
- Use your signature file to advertise your website. Attach your sig. file to every piece of e-mail and correspondence that leaves your computer. For example here is one of my sig. files:
