Is the latest reality series from NBC, “Meet Mr. Mom” out of touch with reality?
NBC describes the show this way. “Each week, moms from two different families are surprised with a luxury vacation, while the dads are left to manage their chaotic households. The results are funny, heartwarming and something every busy family can relate to!”
“The show did not reflect MY state of fatherhood, but I think it did portray what the majority of moms would tell you their spouse is like,” says Jim Morey, a father of four in Huntington Beach, Calif., in an interview with http://www.InteractiveDadMagazine.com.
But he says the fathers on the show clearly don’t reflect the lives of all dads. And certainly not his.
“This was not a valid portrayal of what a challenge it is to be involved with your kids and help your wife around the house on a daily basis - AFTER you get home from your job that pays the bills!” says Morey.
“Meet Mr. Mom”, the new reality series from NBC, has two fathers taking on their wives’ roles. In the premier episode Tuesday night, the moms were removed from the homes while the dads were left to fend for themselves.
Both dads were surprised at what it takes to do what their spouses do. And they seemed overwhelmed with the chores.
Morey, who’s been married 14 years, says he’s a very proud to say he’s an actively involved dad, unlike the fathers spotlighted in the NBC show.
He’s an Information Technology (IT) specialist. He says his employer is very family-friendly and allows him to work a schedule that enables him to be home by 2:30pm to spend quality time with his children. It also provides a break for his wife who stays at home.
“I have always tried to relieve my wife from the kids once I get home by getting the kids outdoors playing something with me,” says Morey. Usually he plays softball.
His children range in age from 12 to 4. He enjoys being a dad so much, he used his computer skills to create a website www.notbadforadad.com just to share the joys of fatherhood with other dads.
AN AT-HOME DAD POINT OF VIEW
“Times have changed… unless you’re talking about the popular media’s portrayal of dads staying at home,” says Stuart Ungar, from Louiseville, KY, founder of Louiseville At-Home Dads. He’s concerned that people will see dads as less capable then moms, which will reflect poorly on at-home fathers.
“Most at-home dads are all for pointing out the contributions of moms and drawing attention to the importance of a parent staying home when possible. It just shouldn’t be at the expense of dads who have consciously made the choice to be stay-at-home parents,” says Ungar, father of Aaron, 6 and Eden, 3.
“The problem is that many people tend to generalize that being at home with kids is naturally the mom’s job and that the dad is just a poor substitute,” he adds. He says the network reality series, Meet Mr. Mom, does everything to reinforce that.
“Insulting name for a real silly show,” says Ungar.
NBC’S TAKE
NBC acknowledges that before the show aired it received complaints from stay-at-home-dad groups concerned about how fathers were going to be portrayed.
The network today said it had not received any complaints since the program aired. NBC says the show gives everyone a better impression of at-home dads, because the show helps everyone appreciate the difficultly of being an at-home parent–no matter what the sex.
The network is proud of the show because it helps bring families closer together. And it gives both parents and the children a greater appreciation of one another.
LEARNING THE TOUGHEST WAY POSSIBLE
There were no cameras to chronicle what Jim Morey and his family experienced earlier this year. His wife’s mother was diagnosed with cancer, and he found himself taking on an even greater role in the home. Because while she cared for her mom, he cared for the children.
“It was during those four months that I truly became aware of how much work it is EVERY day to keep the family wheels running smoothly,” says Morey.
His mother-in-law lost her battle with cancer in April.
“I have always told my wife that even though I was the one with the “job” she works MUCH, MUCH harder than I do on a daily basis,” says Morey. “The 4 months… only reinforced that fact in my mind.”
“Meet Mr. Mom” is a 6-part reality show. It airs Tuesdays at 8:00pm ET on NBC.

(ARA) - This is a story of passion and passionate differences, experienced by couples facing the strategic and often wrenching shifts taking place on the home front. One aspires to live in a home filled with the warmth, beauty and romance of a log home, while the other agonizes over the concept.
Why are people drawn to log homes? According to surveys, nine out of 10 people who choose a log home say they made their decision because they liked its distinctive look. Given the weight of the aesthetics, why do so many couples agonize over the details?
For some, a little research can give pause. That’s how it was for John and Katherine Overbee, who had long dreamed about building a log cabin as a retirement home. “We backed off a little,” he said. “Unless you have a lot of time and money, the intricacies of solid log construction can be worrisome.”
Even with all their uniqueness, there are basically two different types of solid log home construction: handcrafted, the most extreme log home, which may take years and millions to complete; and the milled D-log, in which the top, bottom and one side of the log are milled flat. With both methods, one log is stacked on top of another to form a wall, and then the roof is built off the walls. Proper allowances must be made around windows, doors, stairs, and cabinetry to allow the log walls to settle through the years.
“I love the look,” says Katherine. “But it seemed like everyone we spoke with has had problems.” The problem is the way cold air finds its way through the solid log wall. “During the first three years the log walls can actually shrink and settle,” John says, as he shows how he held a piece of paper by a log wall and watched it move from the air infiltration. “If a guy likes to caulk there’s less of a problem,” he adds with a smile.
So . . . should you go out on the limb? For many, like the Overbees, building a solid log home was not a logical decision. The solution came when the couple discovered a hybrid form of log home construction.
It was more than two decades ago when David Janczak, founder of Wisconsin Log Homes, began testing new-energy-efficient designs and introduced the Thermal-Log building system. To eliminate heat loss and stop the settling problems, Janczak designed a super-insulated, 6-inch thick-framed wall. Just as important, he also originated the precut half-logs with full log corners. In essence, he created an entirely new category of log home construction.
The insulated log home construction not only satisfied John but also gave him the peace of mind to build the home they dreamed about. “I absolutely love it,” says Katherine. “We’re at home — it’s a place of peace.”
Just under 2,000 square feet, it’s a home of pleasures for Katherine and John. “We were surprised at how well this space accommodates our daily activities,” Katherine says. The people at Wisconsin Log Homes suggested they look carefully at their lifestyle and how they really live.
“We cannot emphasize enough how important it is to work with a team of people who want to help you build your dream home,” says John. “They guided us through every step of the process.” He credits Wisconsin Log Homes for making their home a better place to live.
Katherine admits that she did get ahead of the process when she selected a 3,666-square-foot floor plan within 10 minutes of paging through Wisconsin Log Homes planning guide. The 144-page catalog is filled with color photos and over 100 floorplans but most importantly, helpful building information to guide people in a logical sequence.
Upstairs, two bedrooms flank the bathroom. The loft doubles as an office. The open downstairs contains a kitchen, living and dining room, plus the master bedroom. Just off the dining area is a cozy room that Katherine uses as her art studio.
The Overbees were also delighted when they discovered that Wisconsin Log Homes had a Design Center and an in-house interior designer for creative support. Working with an open floor plan, it was important to integrate the kitchen. Wood flooring connects the kitchen with the living and dining space. Lighting, cabinets and unique furnishings complement the elegant yet rustic log interior.
“It all came together so nicely and it’s so beautiful. The end result is a home that emphasizes who we are,” Katherine says. “Friendly, relaxed, nothing fancy, nothing extravagant. It fits us like a glove.”
Oh, one other thing: It wasn’t the large floor plan that Katherine loved, it was the large custom-tailored window wall — it makes a striking statement and frames a special view from the great room.
If you would love living in a log home but have concluded that the intricacies of solid log construction are depriving you of your dreams, then perhaps you should contact the people at Wisconsin Log Homes. And if your choice is this hybrid form of half-log construction it will not only satisfy, but also delight you. I admit it. When I saw my first Honda Element a few years back I thought it was one of the most hideous looking vehicles on the planet. Then I saw the Scion xA and Scion xB, so I quickly relegated the Element to third place. I confess that my earlier feelings about the Element have changed, possibly because I see so many of them on the road these days and perhaps because I see its usefulness. No matter, the Honda Element is a unique looking vehicle and it is a lot less freakish than what you or I may think.
Freedom from convention. That is the saying on Honda’s web site when it comes to labeling the Element. In many ways, this marketing slogan is true. Who says that any vehicle has to conform to what you expect? True, past radical models failed miserably. The Ford Edsel and VW Thing are two that come to mind. Yet, the times are different and a truly “rad” look is in. Real in, if you know what I mean.
The Element does have a practical side to it. Although it is shaped like a breadbox and equipped with two large doors as well as two smaller doors [reminds me of the Saturn ION], the 4WD LX Element has just about what any driver needs for just under USD$20K: ABS; theft deterrent; air conditioning; cruise control; power windows, doors, mirrors, and locks; and a AM/FM/CD audio system with 4 speakers and a clock. Standard powertrain include a feisty 2354cc I4 mated to a 5 speed manual transmission; a four speed automatic is optional but considering that this car is geared toward young people you can pretty much count on the manny tranny winning drivers out over the automatic.
Many of the components for the Element are borrowed from the Civic to give it more of a car like ride, while keeping its truck like appearance. Open all four doors at the same time and the Element evokes a strong resemblance to “suicide doors” that were standard on the 1960s era Lincoln Continentals as well as the Rolls-Royce Phantom. Honda was likely thinking that this design would make it easier for passengers to retrieve all of their gear without popping up the rear hatch and crawling in. Indeed, everything in the Element is easily accessible and the vehicle was designed for the outdoorsman.
Prices start at around $17,500 for the base 2wd model and climb to just over $21,500 for the fully equipped 4wd version. Compared to the average SUV, the Element is priced very competitively and opens up a niche of buyers that Honda hopes to exploit.
Whatever you think of the Element’s looks the vehicle is an attention getter. Judging by the sales, it is a hit with the young crowd.

Does the thought of a goldfish leave you uninspired? Goldfish are a common pet for children, yet the world of pet fish is so much more diverse and interesting than the little round bowl with a single fish swimming in circles. Aquariums are very soothing, and one need only to think how many dentists, doctors, and other offices keep a fish tank in the reception area. The combination of water with the graceful movement of the fish is very restful.
When setting up an aquarium you must first decide what type of fish you would like to keep - marine, cold freshwater, tropical freshwater, or brackish, that in-between zone of slightly salty, cold water. Each has its own delightful aspects and beauty, whether it is the simplicity of a cold-water tank, or the varied marine tank with the stunning sea anemones and coral.
You will need to consider the size of tank you want, and the space you have available for it. In my experience it is typical for marine tanks to be quite large. Tropical tanks range in size, and cold water can be as small as the common ‘goldfish bowl’.
The next factor to consider is the cost of the aquarium. Set-up costs will range depending on what fish you wish to keep, but after that the costs are minimal for fish food, chemicals, if required, and the operational costs of any electrical components needed to keep your fish happy and healthy. Each type of fish needs specific conditions in which to thrive. For example, a tropical fish tank requires a heater, filter, and a light, while marine fish must have the correct salinity and chemical balance in their tank. The ongoing cost of keeping fish is an important consideration, as with any pet.
We have a sixty litre tank housing tropical fish. The tank also contains live plants, tank decorations, and a ‘bubble wall’, as optional extras. The wall releases bubbles of air into the water, powered by electricity. Whatever you introduce to the tank obviously has an aesthetic pleasure for the owner, but it should also serve a purpose for the fish in your aquarium. The plants and decorations give the fish a variety of places to hide, rest, and play. The bubble wall helps to aerate the water, as well as providing attractive water movement for the owners to enjoy.
The species of fish available is broad, and varies between suppliers. The types of fish you like will probably determine the size and type of tank you purchase. Tropical fish tend to be brightly coloured, and come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and personalities. Marine tanks are fascinating with the beautiful plant and fish life. Even the common goldfish are available in a range of colour variations that make them not as boring as one might remember from their childhood.
We have three types of fish - Neon Tetras, Green Catfish, and Bristle-nosed Plecostomi. The Tetras are pretty and dainty, the catfish cute and funny. The Plecostomi, our most recent arrivals, are the dark and mysterious residents.
Whatever fish you decide to bring into your tank, you will need to consider whether they will live together peacefully or not. For example, our Plecostomi will eat other fish if not adequately fed. The stunning Male Siamese fighting fish, or Beta, can be okay with other fish, but put together, they will fight to the death.
Your fish tank is part of your home’s décor, so think about the look you want for your tank. Once you have the fish chosen, you want to complement them, as well as the room where the tank resides. Gimmicky plastic tank decorations will overshadow colourful fish, while dark-coloured fish will be practically invisible in an all natural stone and wood environment.
When considering what else to put inside your tank, besides the fish, choices range from artificial or live plants, to a sunken ship or a playful “Gone Fishing” sign. We chose a couple of small spiky live plants, a cracked urn, and part of a coliseum wall to harmonize together, providing an interesting tank whilst meeting the varied needs of our fish.
Your fish tank is as customizable as you want, and no one tank ever looks the same. A tank makes a living, vibrant feature that will delight visitors, children, and owners alike. For a little time to maintain water changes and quality, everyone can enjoy their own magical, underwater world.

How good would it make you feel if every time you spend money you get a reward? Pretty good I would think, well you can, with a credit card reward scheme, but only if you know how to manage these credit cards.
Credit card rewards are a great way to reward their loyal customers by given them something back every time they use their credit card. Most credit card companies give you reward points, for example say for every £10 you spend you get 1 reward point back. You can then save these points and redeem them for holidays, TVs, flights and more or even cash rebates.
The credit card companies are looking for ways to make us spend more money with our credit cards and as the more we spend the more profit that the credit card companies will get. Interest rates are getting higher and do not forget the retailers as they charge them a fee of up to 2% on the amount that we spend in their premises.
A cash back credit card is properly what most people go for. With cash back credit card you can purchase whatever you wish, and receive cash back, however, with point rewards you are restricted to what you can purchase. You usually receive your cash back in a lump sum each year, and many customers tend to see this as the best option. The people who can make this scheme work to their advantage are the credit card customers that never pay interest charges, as they get all the advantages but do not pay a penny back in interest.
One of the best cash back credit cards on the market is the offer from American Express, their Blue card and Platinum card are two of the best cards around, you have to spend more to gain full advantage of the Platinum card spending over £7,500 to get a 2% return on every £100 spent.
The best reward cards are usually self-motivated as with Virgin who will give you more value for putting your reward points, into buying airline tickets with them. Although Tesco will only redeem 50p for every £100 spent in their store means they are not exactly breaking the bank!
The credit card reward scheme is not for everyone; if you are a borrower meaning that you don’t pay your debt off fully each month then a reward card is not for you. The reason is the interest that they add to your account every month, will exceed the amount of points that would have accumulated on your spending so you’ll not benefit from this scheme.
Many credit card reward schemes are now targeted to the travel market. Credit card companies look on this sector as being more lucrative for the consumer and the rewards are specifically targeted as a benefit that many people will enjoy. Supermarkets are becoming more prominent in the reward credit card environment with Asda, Sainsbury’s and Tesco major players allowing consumers to charge their reward points to their weekly shopping bill.

You may find it difficult to manage finances together when
you’ve been acustom to managing your finances alone. But when
you become part of a couple, many things change, and your
finances are no exception! Some couples take the traditional
path of blending all their money together, however today more
and more couples are deciding to keep their finances separate.
What are the benefits of each way? The benefits of combining
funds into one checking account includes easier record keeping,
simplified money management (you hope), and less paperwork when
applying for credit. In addition, the blending of finances can
create a “unified front” in that aspect of a relationship that
simply can’t be argued with. Obviously, the drawbacks are that
both people are actively using the account and that will make it
harder to track all the transactions and keep up with your
balance when you don’t know what the other is doing.
If you choose to maintain separate accounts, this will allow
each person more freedom, because they won’t have to run
purchases by the other person. In addition, doing so may create
fewer complications in the relationship, allow each person to
build their own good credit, and quite simply allow them to
maintain a sense of independence. The most obvious downfall to a
his and her finance arrangement is that it can be
disproportionately unfair. If one person makes $80,000 per year,
and the other $35,000, the person making the lower salary may
not like the arrangement!
If you do decide to keep “his and her” checking or savings
accounts, then you’ll need to find a system for paying bills and
handling other joint finances together. One option that has
worked great for many couples is to create a third checking
account and designate it as the “combo” fund. You can set up
your separate, individual checking accounts to have money
automatically withdrawn from them each month at most financial
institutions. You will have to sit down together and decide what
amount needs to be in the joint account every month in order to
cover the “combined” expenses. In a situation like the
above–where one person makes significantly more than the
other–it is usual for the higher wage earner to pay a larger
portion of the expenses.
Another aspect to consider with his and her finances is credit.
This can be considerably good or bad, depending on your
individual credit ratings. However, at some point you may want
to apply for joint credit with your spouse. You will most likely
want to make big purchases together throughout the marriage such
as a car, a house, or appliances, and it’s much easier to do
that if you have joint credit. With joint credit, you will both
be 100% responsible for the debt, even if you co-sign a loan
with your spouse or add your name to your spouse’s credit card
account. On the other hand, if you decide to maintain separate
credit, the general rule is that you are not responsible for
each other’s debt. (The exception to this is if the debt is
considered a house hold expense.)
If one person had bad credit prior to getting married, then the
person with good credit may want to keep their credit separate.
Why? Because if you apply for credit together, the lower credit
score will bring down the higher one.
The best advice? Be upfront about your financial weaknesses, and
discuss a plan–before the big day–to handle them. Once you
have identified the potential pitfalls, it will only take a
small amount of planning to overcome them.

The skin, as we are all taught in high school, is the largest
and the most visible tissue in the human body. Of course it is.
It covers us entirely from head to toe. It is our protective
casing that allows us to move freely and gives us feedback on
external textures, climate and other things associated with the
sense of touch. The pores in our skin also helps us to release
internal wastes through perspiration. These, among other
benefits and special characteristics, make our skin one of the
most important parts of our body - and therefore one of the
first things to take care of.
We want our skin to be supple and smooth, yet still strong and
healthy. There have been countless skin care products and
treatments developed over the years that have helped a lot of
people and solved many skin problems. However, it’s one thing to
cure skin damage and it’s another to protect it. When you were
born, your skin was nothing short of perfect. Therefore, the
first logical thing to do is to protect your skin from any kind
of damage or unwanted reaction from external factors.
Nonetheless, there are numerous things that can damage your skin
even without you knowing it. Some of these would be climate or
weather, unknown allergies from food or drink, and the most
dreaded skin damager of all - age. Though it’s possible to stay
away from harsh climates and food you are allergic to, it is sad
to note that age is something that we simply cannot avoid.
Everything solid in this world wears out with age. However, this
doesn’t mean we can’t do anything about it.
There are various products and treatments available for making
your skin look younger and less wrinkled. Nevertheless, the
important thing is to keep your skin as healthy as possible all
the time while you’re young, in order to effectively help in
slowing down the ageing process. The more careless you are with
your skin, the faster it’ll develop wrinkles and look older.
Leading dermatologist Greta Winslow of Wade Skin Clinic advises
“….always remember that healthy skin is the result of a
healthy lifestyle. And by healthy lifestyle, we mean a balanced
diet, lots of water (less sodas and carbonated drinks),
sufficient vitamins, regular exercise, enough sleep, no smoking,
less alcohol consumption, and effective management of daily
stress. It’s also good to suggest that the use of tanning beds
and some topical skin treatments or medication that are said to
provide “instant” results may be more harmful than helpful. It’s
always good to consult with a skin doctor for things you aren’t
sure of”
In addition to these lifestyle tips, skin experts say that the
best way to care for your skin is to cleanse it as often as
possible, or at least on a daily basis. They note, however, that
the choice of skin cleanser is critical in having healthy skin.
Choose the one that’s mild and with less chemicals. Make up must
be totally removed before cleansing and always use only lukewarm
water. For additional information, visit www.bestskinpeel.com.

Considering a career change?
By: Rodger Bailey, MS
Are you thinking about a career change? Many people do this because of specific problems or difficulties. Others want to make such a change because of some growing, generalized dissatisfaction. A career change is becoming more common. A few decades ago this kind of change was considered inappropriate. People were thought to be “job-hoppers” when they moved from job to job. People with this behavior were thought to be unstable and without loyalty. But now, changing your job or changing your career is generally considered to be a normal way to advance in work.
There are some interesting reasons that people are motivated to make this kind of change: one is that the person’s situation changes and a job or career change is required. For instance, maybe the spouse moves away, and the person must move with the family. Or, maybe the company goes out of business. It could be that the person’s physical or mental capabilities change and they cannot perform that job or career.
A common motivation is that the person was never happy with the job or career and the situation never improved. So, over time the person has grown a dissatisfaction with the situation. At some point this dissatisfaction grows so large and so deep, the person must change.
Another common reason for a career change is that something changed in the environment of that job or career. A specific co-worker is no longer at that job, so the person chooses to make the change. Or, the regulations or the technology of the career changes, and the person does not want to continue.
But the most common reason people make a career change is their personal “clock.”
Some people have a very ‘long clock.’ These people are available for a career change every 15 to 25 years. They tend to maintain their job or career for their whole life. Retired postal or railroad workers and retired teachers are excellent examples of the ultra-stable employees.
Some people have a clock of 5 to 7 years. This is the ‘normal clock’ for the USA, about 60% of workers in the USA have this clock. People with this clock are comfortable at their job or task until their clock lapses (5 to 7 years). At this point they start to look for another job, even if they like the job they have. If they do not get the change they need, they start to be depressed. The more time that passes before they get the change they need, the deeper the depression. If the depression gets too deep, the only relief can come from changing careers.
Another group has a clock of 1 to 3 years. This is considered to be a ’short clock,’ and represents about 30% of the USA population. Within this group there are individuals who have a 1 year clock, others with a 2 year clock, and even others who have a 3 year clock. They have the same characteristics as those with the ‘normal clock.’ When their clock lapses, they need to change jobs and if they do not get the change they need, they get depressed.
When we change jobs or change career, we feel refreshed and our clock gets reset to zero. If you have needed a change because of your clock, you probably have been depressed. Making the change refreshes the clock and makes the depression go away.
If you have been working enough years, you can look back at your work history and you can see your pattern of changing jobs and/or changing career. Those with a short clock rarely plan for retirement. A person with a short clock might have a wealth of work experience, but have little to carry them when they retire.
If you do not know your clock, you will probably change jobs (and even change careers) because of your clock. If you know your clock, there are things you can do to make the best use of your clock and provide yourself with more stability in your work life. When you make a minor change before your clock lapses, you can refresh your clock (set it to zero). Understanding how and when to refresh your clock can improve your job and career stability.
With more information about your own patterns, you can improve your job and career choices. You can choose jobs and careers which match your patterns. You can choose when you change your path. When you understand your patterns, you can manage your future with more certainty.
Rodger Bailey, MS, has been helping people understand their career patterns since 1980. You can learn more about people’s patterns and their profiles at his website: http://www.labprofile.com
